The register question nobody enjoys

Ask a small firm how many computers it owns and the answer arrives with a range attached. That is not slackness. Hardware gets bought department by department, people leave carrying it, and a laptop bought for a three month job has a habit of lasting seven years.

Everything else on this card leans on that number being right, because a line reaches only what came onto the bench. The upkeep line is what turns an estimate into a register, keeps it current, and makes the gap between owned and covered visible instead of theoretical.

Apple and handsets stand apart deliberately

Steering Macs from a console built for Windows produces a console that lists Macs and steers almost nothing about them. Addigy was written for Apple, so profiles hold, updates genuinely get driven through, and compliance is a fact rather than a hopeful column.

Handsets take a line of their own for the same reason. Plenty of your post gets read on a phone, and phones bring troubles no computer has: hostile wifi, sideloaded apps, links that never reach a desk. Zimperium settles the verdict on the handset, and that is why it still holds on networks nobody here controls.

Where this movement stops

Each of the six sheets carries a block like this one. It is the section most suppliers quietly omit, and it is the section that settles whether you feel let down in a year.

  • Applying a fix is not the same as having one. We apply what makers publish. Where a maker has published nothing there is nothing to apply, and the truthful answer is a workaround rather than a fix.
  • Screening is a blunt instrument. Category rules refuse whole classes of destination. Now and then one of them will be something you wanted, which is exactly why a permit list exists and gets kept tidy.
  • We do not steer what people own privately. A handset that never enrols carries nothing, reports nothing, and answers to nothing on this sheet.
  • A failing disk still fails. Upkeep will usually see one deteriorating well before it dies. It cannot stop it dying, and whatever you needed off it belongs on the second movement sheet.
  • Steering handsets is not watching people. These lines exist to judge threats on the device. They are not a way to read private messages or follow staff about, and we will not configure them into one.
